Specialists are still divided over whether moose and the European elk represent
closely related sibling species or sub-populations of the same species. The
same is true for caribou and reindeer. Regardless of the exact distinction,
each of the pairs consists of populations of animals that have diverged very
little from an ancestral stock. Hence it is almost certain that each of the
pairs represented a single population within the recent past.
